Liam Lawson gave his opinion on his podcast about what he thinks about McLaren, who hails from New Zealand, gaining fame for the British.
Born in the impressive island nation, Lawson is not the first New Zealand F1 driver, with Denny Hulme having already won the world championship for the country. Yet it was not them, but the orange McLaren team, who achieved the greatest success, having been founded by a local, Bruce McLaren, and having first raced in those colours. Yes, but the team still has no ties to the country, unlike England, to which it is linked by a thousand threads. This bothered Lawson...
"I don't understand it at all. McLaren is a New Zealand team down to the last detail, even in the name. It's a bit like Red Bull Racing, where they play the Austrian anthem when they win, even though all their roots are in England. McLaren's headquarters are there too, but they are still New Zealanders. From a New Zealander's perspective, it seems like a huge stupidity, especially when the greatest legend, Bruce McLaren, is the founder of the whole project," Lawson expressed his justified criticism.
